Feliciana Birds & John James Audubon

“In 1821 John James Audubon spent four months at Oakley Plantation, primarily as tutor to Eliza Pirrie, but utilizing much of his free time collecting and painting birds for his monumental work, Birds of America. Audubon State Historic Site, the site of Oakley Plantation, in is in heart of what Audubon referred to as his “Happy Land.” This historic site offers the visitor a glimpse of plantation life of the early 19th Century and a sampling of Audubon’s relatively brief visit here. But this site offers the birder or naturalist much more. It offers the opportunity for the visitor to enjoy the rich natural setting around Oakley in much the same way the great naturalist , Audubon, himself, experienced it.” The Office of State Parks, State of Louisiana, USA
